The School of Energy and Power Engineering was established in 2006. The origin of major in internal combustion engine and the thermal research institute had a long history, which can be traced back to 1949, when Dalian University of Technology( when Dalian University) set up Machine Building Department. Created by Hu Guodong, the distinguished expert in international internal combustion engine, it was granted the first doctoral degrees in 1981 and the first master degrees in 1978, training China’s first professional doctorate in internal combustion engine. The School of Energy and Power Engineering was named after “Shipbuilding Department” and “Power Engineering Department”.
Based on the sprit of inclusiveness, the school attaches great importance to the construction of staff team. At present, there are 105 teaching staff in total, including 78 teachers, 14 experimental and technical workers, 6 administrative workers, 4 people in education management, 2 people in the editorial department and 1 worker. There are 29 professors (researchers), 38 associate professors and 11 lecturers, among whom two are national second-grade professors. One is committee of Department of science and technology of the Ministry of Education. One is expert in International Atomic Energy Agency. One is in Hundred-Talent Program (Chinese Academy of Sciences). One gets the Outstanding Youth Science Fund. Five are awarded with new-century talents in the Ministry of Education. Two are excellent teachers in Liaoning province. Seven are in the “Hundred Talents Level” in Liaoning province. Moreover, there is one science and technology innovation team in Liaoning province.
The school puts talent cultivation first. Dalian University of Technology is famous for its learning atmosphere. The school sets thermal energy and power engineering, energy and environmental system engineering as undergraduate majors, among which thermal energy and power engineering is the national characteristic specialty, authenticated by the national engineering education. The school has five professional directions(Power machinery and automation, impeller machinery and automation, thermal engineering, refrigeration and cryogenic engineering, energy and environmental engineering), six master enrollments (Power machinery and engineering, fluid machinery and engineering, thermal engineering, refrigeration and cryogenic engineering, engineering thermal physics, energy and environmental engineering) and six doctor enrollments, as well as a postdoctoral research center for studies in power engineering and engineering thermal physics. Now, there are 763 undergraduates, 319 masters, 159 doctorates, 17 post-doctorates. Many talents cultivated by the school are employed in the domestic well-known colleges and universities, research institutes, large state-owned enterprises and government agencies, gaining widespread high praise. The employment rate of graduates has ranked the first in the university for many years in a row.
The school has a sound system with distinctive features and great achievements. It is the science and technology innovation platform of the key construction subject of "project 211" and the key construction of "project 985". The college has one national key (nurturing) discipline (power machinery and engineering) and one Liaoning province first-grade discipline (power engineering and engineering thermal physics) with all seven secondary disciplines(administer engineering thermal physics, thermal engineering, power machinery and engineering, fluid machinery and engineering machinery, energy and environmental engineering). It has formed three preponderant fields in " science and technology of marine energy utilization ", " theory and technology of advanced internal combustion mechanism " and " theory and technology of advanced energy equipment ". What’s more, it has formed distinct features in six research directions, including "natural gas hydrate resources development science and technology", "advanced desalination science and technology", "advanced internal combustion engine theory and technology", "gas turbine collaborative design", "special chemical energy equipment and chemical safety equipment technology" and " energy transmission mechanism and application in extreme conditions ".
The school has scientific research strengths and the domestic first-class hardware conditions. With a construction area of 32000 m2, it has three national research platforms (shipbuilding national engineering center, Liaoning major equipment manufacturing collaborative innovation center, international scientific and technological cooperation base for safe and efficient exploitation of natural gas hydrate), 6 provincial key laboratories and technology research centers (key laboratory of marine energy utilization and energy conservation of ministry of education, key laboratory of the internal combustion engine in Liaoning province, key laboratory of desalination in Liaoning province, energy conservation education center of state economic and trade commission of China (Dalian), product quality supervision and inspection center of internal combustion engine in Liaoning province, industrial energy-saving technical service center in Liaoning province). The instruments and equipment are worth 150 million RMB. It has undertaken a large number of major national and key projects, with nearly 300 million expenditure of projects in the past five years. More than 1500 papers were published in the domestic and international academic journals, including more than 700 papers by SCI retrieval, nine ESI highly cited papers. They have won two national prizes and 12 awards at the provincial or ministerial level. More than 90 have been authorized national invention patents.
With the passage of time, the School of Energy and Power Engineering has cultivated the culture of” Study Extensively, Cultivate morally, Discriminate Clearly, Practice Earnestly”. The teaching spirit of “Actions speak louder than words” is deeply rooted in the hearts of people. The learning spirit of “ Striving Relentlessly” has spread all over the world. After years of unremitting efforts, the School of Energy and Power Engineering has gradually developed into one of the most influential scientific research and talent training bases in China.
Oriented to the future, the School of Energy and Power Engineering will always aim at the construction and development demands of top disciplines, deepening reform and making greater contributions to the country's energy and environment, machinery, aerospace and human progress.
